As someone who primarily watches dubs and quite enjoys them, I say with strong conviction that the UBW dub is one of the worst out there. The two leads, Papenbrook (Shirou) and Lee (Rin) are terrible at capturing the characters emotions.
It takes a show with a significant amount of depth and turns it into a really basic shounen thanks to Papenbrook especially. And it's not just them, if you want a good example, watch the scene where, every actor is completely sub par compared to the originals. The only defense for the dub is that these actors are new to the roles (mostly), while the sub actors have been playing the characters for over 10 years, but honestly that's just more reason to deal with subtitles for a far more convincing performance. And before comments saying it's because I heard the sub actors first, that's actually not true. My first experience with Fate was watching the original DEEN anime, which also features Mela Lee as Rin, and I was completely fine with her until I heard Kane Ueda absolutely destroy her performance in the VN. Also Archer in the new one is completely missing the mark. There's absolutely no smirk in his voice, no smug, and it makes his character ludicrously bland.
TL;DR Watch the sub. As someone who primarily watches dubs and quite enjoys them And still. You probably had read the VN (with voice over) and watched UBW anime subbed, before ever hearing a voice from UBW dub. Papenbrook (Shirou) and Lee (Rin) are terrible at capturing the characters emotions.
That's your opinion, I disagree with it, as well as many would. Like in 90% of cases of dubs, people dislike them because they watched sub first or maybe they read VN, and you got attached to the japanese, so you end up comparing, and it feels 'off' to you.
Not because they are sub par but because they are different, and do it differently, and you don't have the necessary perspective or objectivity to determine that it is the reason you feel this way. It takes a show with a significant amount of depth and turns it into a really basic shounen thanks to Papenbrook especially. Wow, I don't even. If you think watching with subs adds any depth to your experience, you are very mistaken. And it's not just them, if you want a good example, watch the scene where 1st season Spoiler, every actor is completely sub par compared to the originals. Simply subpar because they dont try to imitate the japanese cast? No smirk and no smug in Archers voice?
Because they didn't want it there, they portrayed archer differently, and its not worse, its different. I just can't help but be irritated when people don't even try to not be biased. And why are you trying to indoctrinate him into watching the sub?
He didn't ask which is better or to help with a choice, I bet he has encountered a fair share of dub hate himself. He watches the dub because he wants to and prefers such an experience - like not needing to read, and understanding the dialogue by listening to it - the fact that you don't understand words that you hear does often make it more special to a person, because 'emotion' is the only thing that you focus on.
Yet truth is unless you are fluent at japanese you can't really know how good VO really is. One could easily make just as baseless statements as you have, like - japanese Shirou sounds like whiny incompetent kid, while Rin sounds like generic tsundere (she really does). The dub is directed by same guy who directed Fate Zero(amazing dub), and done by one of the best dubbing companies, none of the actors are amateurs or bad, but I don't know why I bother arguing about this. This isn't place one would find a lot of people in favour of a dub anyway. P.S I have watched both dub and sub. So you decided to ignore the fact I directly state I encountered Mela Lee before Kane Ueda makes anything else you say redundant, you can't just pick and choose your argument dude.
And I totally agree on Zero, by the way. The fact it has the same director blows my mind, given the fact he is on point with Zero, and completely misses the mark on UBW. Also, how the hell can you justify changing a characters attitude as 'just different'. It's reinterpreting instead of simply translating, which is the reason so many anime fans absolutely hate dubs. It's not up to the ADR Director to change the tone of the characters, it's their job to translate it for an English speaking audience. EDIT: and I'm not trying to indoctrinate them at all, I'm offering one man's opinion to improve their experience.
Just like this entire sub would jump in to say 'omg don't watch the DEEN!' If someone were posting about it.
So I ask again, why are you vehemently defending a sub-par dub? It's beginning to seem like you might actually be Bryce Papenbrook, and if that's the case, why do you keep using the exact same voice for every character you do? I am with you bro, the dude up there doesnt know what is he talking about and he even called me weaabo (i dont really care but still that word is meant as an insult right?) i know that he likes the Dub and whatever but he has to recognize the fact that the voices on Shirou,Rin and Archer are totally awful as you stated, and i love Zero Dub (but i love more the sub of course) so i was hoping UBW Dub to be as good as Zero but noooo, I didnt like Shirou´s voice actor since i heard him in the trailer and the problems you mentioned are totally true. I directly state I encountered Mela Lee before Kane Ueda makes anything else you say redundant no it doesn't and besides if you did indeed listen to VN and then watch bunch of other stuff including UBW subbed, its basically the same thing, (especially because of VN having so much voice over), it will leave a strong impression on how characters 'should' sound to you. It's their job to translate it for an English speaking audience. That's exactly what they do, they aren't aimed at rewatchers or weeaboos, many like what they do, that's why dubs are still popular and becoming even more popular as more and more high quality dubs are coming out.
Where have you heard dubs are supposed to imitate japanese VO? People who hate dubs, are of no relevance.
I don't know why you bring them up, i thought you're not one of those guys. No their job is not just translating, sorry you don't know what you are talking about if you say that. Dubs that do only that, indeed suck. Crispin freeman's Kirei sounds nothing like japanese Kirei, yet I prefer love and prefer Crispin freeman (he is hard not to like). All great dubs have different ways of approaching characters, and often different interpretations like Boccano, Kuroshitsuji or Black Lagoon and many dubs done by Funimation and this company. And like I've said before, many people love this dub including Shirou, Rin and Archer, prefer it even, are they wrong and don't know any better?
Sigh In fact a lot of people are impressed by Shirou's dub and find it better than expected, because they thought he would scream and sound like Eren. And believe me those directors and the actors know better than you do how to do their job.
I think you shouldn't argue about this topic as long as you keep thinking like biased fanboy. Freeman's Kirei is so spot on impersonating Joji Nakata I guarantee he's watched the sub and worked on imitating it, it's bloody flawless, so what the heck are you talking about? The reason I bring up people who hate dubs is because I disagree with the notion, yet understand it thanks to ADR directors pulling stunts like this. If more dubs were true to the original, and translated rather than altered, we'd likely see a more accepting attitude from the hardcore fanatics. Also I totally disagree with your notion of blind faith in the director and actors purely because they have that job. What makes them instantly more knowledgable than anyone else?
After all, they have lots of different shows to work on, they likely don't have the time to study he source to a 10th of a degree that we do. I'm not saying the characters need to sound identical, as that's virtually impossible with certain characters due to the differences in our way of speaking, but the core motivations should be there. The perfect example is Archer.
He is a snarky bastard the entire time, showing very little, if any, emotion, so that when you do get glimpses at him being genuine, it's far more impactful. Kaji's Archer is just. Driver behringer bcd 2000 para windows 7 64 bits. He's completely reinterpreted the characters tone so as not to step on the toes of his previous dub actor, which, while I understand the motivation, is completely disrespectful to his original actor, and removes huge elements of his character in favour of being different for difference's sake. I understand at this point your only defense is to call me a fanboy, but it's still vaguely pathetic, don't you think? Freeman's Kirei is so spot on impersonating Joji Nakata I guarantee he's watched the sub and worked on imitating it, it's bloody flawless, so what the heck are you talking about?
Watch Fate Stay Night Unlimited
That's just how Freeman sounds, lol - do you really watch a lot of dubs? Because he voices a lot of notable characters (Shizuo, Alucard). And he sounds nothing like japanaese Kirei, I don't know how you can even say that. I can't imagine Crispin Freeman doing voice of Araya Souren. I guarantee he's watched the sub and worked on imitating it I tell you again VAs aren't meant to be imitators, nor does Crispin Freeman, maybe you should watch some of his interviews. Thanks to ADR directors pulling stunts like this =doing their job, lol. Great director who knows exactly what he is doing.
But whatever. You know better, random guy on the internet. What makes them instantly more knowledgable than anyone else? Instantly makes them more credible. Its not blind faith its just reasonable and rational attitude. Certainly, you don't think you actually know better than they do?
The Holy Grail War is a battle royale among seven magi who serve as Masters. Masters, through the use of the command seals they are given when they enter the war, command Heroic Spirits known as Servants to fight for them in battle.
